Cars Made in Mexico: What You Should Know

From my personal experience selling Hondas in the past, vehicles manufactured in Mexico typically take longer to arrive due to shipping and/or ground transportation. As a general rule, if you’re pre-purchasing a vehicle built in Mexico, it’s wise to anticipate potential delays in delivery.

TRDL:

Why Are So Many Cars Made in Mexico?

Mexico has become an automotive manufacturing powerhouse for several reasons. First, labor costs are generally lower than in the U.S., allowing companies to operate more efficiently. Second, Mexico’s proximity to the United States makes shipping fast and affordable. Trade agreements like the USMCA (formerly NAFTA) also encourage automakers to manufacture vehicles there. Finally, Mexico has developed a skilled workforce and modern manufacturing facilities, making it an attractive place for global brands.

Which Cars Are Made in Mexico?

Many familiar models come from Mexican plants. For 2024, here are just a few examples:

  • Chevrolet Blazer, Equinox, Silverado

  • Ford Bronco Sport, Maverick

  • Honda HR-V, Fit

  • Jeep Compass

  • Kia Forte

  • Nissan Sentra, Versa

  • Toyota Tacoma

  • Volkswagen Jetta, Taos

These vehicles are widely available in the U.S. and often have the same quality and features as those made elsewhere.

Is Quality a Concern?

Not at all. Vehicles made in Mexico are built to the same global standards as those produced in other countries. Modern Mexican factories use the latest technology and strict quality control processes, so you can expect the same reliability and safety.

How Can You Tell Where Your Car Was Made?

You can check your car’s Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). If the first digit is a “3,” your vehicle was assembled in Mexico.

Should You Buy a Car Made in Mexico?

Absolutely! Mexican-made cars are reliable, high-quality, and a major part of the American automotive landscape. There’s no reason to avoid them, and you’ll find many popular models come from south of the border.
